Braemar Telemark Festival.
Dates: 3 - 5 March 2007
Tel: 013398 86520
Inaugurated in March 1999, The Braemar Telemark festival attracts more and
more crowds to the North East of Scotland each year. Set in the stunningly
beautiful alpine landscape of the Grampian Mountains, The Braemark Telemark
plays host to a plethora of both on-snow and off-snow activities.
One of the most enduring events of the festival is the mountain race where
participants face the ultimate fitness test and carry objects such as a
bivouac sack, survival rations and a rescue whistle in case of emergencies.
The main feature of the Braemar Telemark Festival is the skiing experience
itself. Afternoon ski passes are available for a few pounds and skiers of
varying levels can try their hand at "telemarking" - A downhill
turn performed on cross-country skis in which the knees are bent and the
inside heel is lifted.
Visitors can indulge in a warm and delicious selection of snacks, meals
and hot beverages at the Cairwell Café, a lodge at the base of the
ski slopes. A trip by chairlift to Butcharts t-bar is an ideal place to
unwind after skiing.
Over the course of the Telemark weekend, the Tele-Social evenings are regular
occurences featuring live music at the Invercauld Arms Hotel. Visitors can
sample traditional Scottish cuisine such as Haggis, Turnips and Mashed Potatoes,
Cullen Skink and Aberdeen Angus Beef amongst a host of regular meals. Entertainment
is provided by local talents of the North East playing an array of traditional
Scottish and Celtic Music, and pop and rock music.
The Braemar Telemark Festival is undoubtedly one of Scotland's fun-packed
winter sports festivals held every March, weather permitting. For more information
on the event and its activities, please contact the festival organisers
on the telephone number above.
