The University of Aberdeen Music Prize is one of the world’s leading music
award ceremonies where The University collaborates with the critically acclaimed
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and BBC Radio 3 to encourage excellence
in contemporary classical composition.
The world renowned competition is one Aberdeen’s most prestigious events
staged annually in the latter part of April each year welcomes emerging
musical composers from all corners of the globe each year. Following a weekend
of workshops, the award ceremony gets underway featuring a plethora of short-listed
composers and members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The winner
receives a £5000 worth commission for their work to be premiered by the
BBC SSO.
This prestigious ceremony also showcases a fascinating weekend of events
ranging from talks and musical performances to a host of other events that
pull in larger crowds, particularly school parties, University lecturers
and students as well as the general public. Musical creativity is also celebrated
with a series of practical events including lessons, workshops giving people,
young and old an insight into how classical composing works.
People of all ages are invited to unveil their hidden potential with the
opportunity to invent their own compositions at the state-of-the-art electronic

Highlights of previous Music Prize events include the sensational Gala Concert
courtesy of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra who perform the five new
string quartets specially composed for the University of Aberdeen Music
Prize. The winner of this unique new prize will be announced at this concert
by judges Robert Saxton and Jonathan Harvey. Other interesting events include
roundtable discussion chaired by Dr Paul Mealor, composer and Director of
this prestigious competition. Topics include for discourse include composition
in the 21st century, compositional curriculum in schools and the how art
has evolved in contemporary society.
