Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) plays host to the some of the world's most exciting and innovative cinema. The EIFF has presented a host of significant and exciting moments in the world of cinema and has welcomed some of the world's leading and cutting edge film producers and directors.

The EIFF is the by far the world's longest running film festival and has dramatically progressed from its modest roots as a documentary -based festival, formed during the aftermath of the Second World War. From the outset, the festival's ambience has always been effervescently bold and its scope has always been internationally focused. In the early days, The Edinburgh International Film Festival premiered timeless wartime epics such as Roberto Rosellini's Germany Year Zero, Robert Flaherty's Louisiana Story and Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu Monogatari.

In the 1960s, The Edinburgh International introduced the spectacular Retrospective event which was well advanced for its time. At that stage, the festival had been taken into a new dimension and paid tribute to the wide range of talents of movie directors of the time, including John Huston, Sam Fuller and a young Martin Scorsese.

The Festival continued to develop its reputation throughout the 1970s and 1980s as the UK's pioneering force in the world of international cinema, introducing British audiences to a plethora of genres such as New German Cinema, American Independent Movies, Japanese, Black and Feminist Cinema. Edinburgh's film festival audiences were able to view great cinematic craftsmanship from across the whole spectrum of film culture, ranging from Stephen Spielberg's ET to Abel Gance's silent movie, Napoleon. The Edinburgh International Film Festival also discovered new talents of the time such as Bill Forsyth and Steven Soderbergh.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival has strengthened its position over the last ten years thanks to the strong artistic dedication of Mark Cousins, Lizzie Franke and current festival director, Shane Danielson. They have all exercised continuous and passionate commitment to domestic and world cinema and as well as demonstrating their evaluative and analytical approach, which is a core ingredient to professional curation at one of the world's leading film festivals.

Over the course of the last few years, the Edinburgh International Film Festival has screened a plethora of popular mainstream movies from the UK and Hollywood Blockbusters, including American Splendor, Old Boy and Hero, The Full Monty, East is East, Amores Perros, 16 Years of Alcohol and a host of other movies that take on a cultural dimension. New features have also been added to bill of events in recent years including Rosebud, a world premières section and Scene by Scene, a major new film study section where Steve Martin and the Coen Brothers have appeared as special guests.

To catch up with Edinburgh International Film Festival, a host of movies are screened at Edinburgh's prestigious cinema venues including the Filmhouse, The Cameo Theatre and the Cineworld in Fountain Park. The EIFF also stages events and showings 40 miles west at Glasgow's GFT and Cineworld Renfrew Street in the heart of Glasgow. The venue brochure provides a comprehensive guide to the festival featuring addresses, maps, bars and restaurants and other information on key venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival can now rightly claim its high rank in the world's movie festival league table alongside its Cannes and Berlin counterparts. The Festival coincides with the Edinburgh International and Fringe Festivals in August, and is certainly an important event for those passionate about film.
