Edinburgh International FestivalDates for 2008: 8 - 31 AugustContact Address: The Hub, Castlehill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NE Tel: +44 (0)131 473 2099 The world renowned Edinburgh International Festival plays host to a rich plethora of classical music, theatre, opera and dance over a three week period every August. The festival's top class performances are staged at Edinburgh's six leading theatres and concert halls and a host of small-scale venues across the city. In addition to this prestigious three-week event, the Edinburgh International Festival oversees a year-round programme of education and outreach work tailored for people of all ages and backgrounds. Inaugurated in 1947, the Festival's fundamental aim is to provide a platform for enriching the 'human spirit' as well as promoting the cultural, educational and economic status of the people of Edinburgh and Scotland. From the outset, the Edinburgh International Festival was an inspiration for theatrical performers to stage their own shows outside the official festival programme and this ultimately developed into the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, its eclectic and grass-roots counterpart. Over the years, around six or more festivals have flourished and developed around the Edinburgh International Festival in August and September, and collectively, they are all often referred as 'The Edinburgh Festival'. The Edinburgh International Festival is regarded as the one of the most significant cultural arts festivals in the world and presents exquisite programmes of classical music, theatre, ballet, opera and choreography, all performed to a high level by some of the world's finest artists. Each artist and production company appear at the Festival through invitation by the Festival Director who manages the overall costs, including artists' fees and travel, venue hire and marketing of events. As an organisation, The Edinburgh International Festival is a non-profit registered charity, generating a large proportion of its income from box office sales and the remainder from fundraising along with some public sector grants. In July 1999 the Edinburgh International Festival opened its first permanent base, The Hub. Housed in the former Highland Tolbooth, one of Edinburgh's most prominent landmarks towering over the Royal Mile, The Hub has been granted historic A-listed building status and its interior has been enhanced by contemporary arts and crafts, including tiling, beautiful stained glass and a striking sculpture hall. This striking gothic building is situated in the vibrant core of the Festival City and is home to The Edinburgh Festival ticket centre and café as well as providing a year-round hub for promoting Edinburgh's diverse cultural life. ...
