The Great Scottish Walk

The Great Scottish Walk is an excellent day out in Edinburgh and provides an invigorating experience for avid walkers or sports-minded competitors. The walk is one of 3 routes - the 6 mile and 12 mile both starting in the verdant and imposing surroundings of Holyrood Park and both finishing in Edinburgh's Meadowbank Stadium in the eastern fringes of the city centre. There is also a golden mile choice which is within the Stadium for those not able to take part in the longer walks.
Both courses straddle some of Edinburgh's most prominent landmarks and landscapes including the Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat situated within the confines of Holyrood Park, The Queen's Edinburgh Residence, Holyroodhouse and a stunning collection of Victorian and Georgian terraces along the way. The longer route extends to Leith Docks and back where you can catch a glimpse of the Royal Yacht Britannia majestically moored at Edinburgh's Ocean Terminal.
The Great Scottish Walk originates from 1968 and for the following 29 years, was branded as the Edinburgh Evening News Sponsored Charity Walk, raising a staggering £1 million at its inception (£1 million in pre-decimalisation terms). After the success of the event during the past three decades, a decision was made in 1998 to transform the walk into a much larger event, and from then on The Great Scottish Walk is an important event in Edinburgh's diverse cultural calendar.
Each June, the event draws in thousands of walkers who partake in one of the three courses and at the same time raise money for their charity of choice. On average the event now raises over £5 million for a host of selected UK wide charities including Marie Curie, Barnardos, British Heart Foundation to name but a few. On completion of each course, all participants receive a medal, finishing certificate and goodie bag for their commitment and generosity.
To add a competitive note to the event, The Great Scottish Walk also features a walking race where teams of four to six compete for Cups and Medals in various categories, certainly more geared for experienced power walkers and ramblers. However, for those wishing to take it in their stride, the event is accessible to everyone, ranging from families, individuals, community groups and companies. Each year, participants are entertained en route and at the finishing point of Meadowbank Stadium with a colourful array of live music, street theatre, spectacular choreography and samba, adding a festival ambience to this national outdoor event.
