Scottish International Storytelling Festival 2008

Dates for 2008: 24 Oct - 2 Nov
Tel: +44 (0131) 556 9579

The Scottish International Story Telling Festival began in 1990 as a celebration of Scottish oral traditions and has now evolved into an International Event with story tellers and guests from around the world.

The festival embraces story telling as an art form, as a selection of international as well as home grown speakers communicate and captivate audiences with an array of folk lore, myths, legends, fairy tales and true stories. The event has also grown in recent years to incorporate other contemporary arts forms such as music, dance, film, modern art and poetry.

The festival goes on to play homage to the traditions of Scotland with story telling, poetry and song. Themes are included each year such as "Scotland and Ireland"; "Across the Water", "Inspiring Capital" and "Life Stories".

The Scottish International Story Telling Centre is now located in the heart of Edinburgh's heritage site on the Royal Mile. It is a support and resources base for storytelling throughout the year and especially at the Festival. It also offers outreach services and helps schools and individuals prepare and share storytelling times. This culminates in a "tell a story day" that is during the Festival.

Festival events for both children and adults take place across top Edinburgh tourist attractions including the Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh Zoo and of course Edinburgh Castle amongst many others. At Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle storytelling has been themed on kings, queens, princes and princesses, not to mention dungeons and war.

International storytellers are invited as both performers and to share their skills with the Scottish Story telling community. The Scottish International Story Telling Centre offers courses during the Festival and throughout the year for amateur and professional story tellers.
