Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre is dubbed as 'Scotland's new writing theatre' and has an established reputation of excellence since it first opened in 1963. The Traverse showcases an extensive programme of award-winning productions and is a highly acclaimed theatre venue for audiences and critics alike.

The Traverse has an unparalleled record for producing the finest contemporary productions and is renowned for commissioning and supporting local and international writers. The theatres objectives are to produce several new productions and showcase a Scottish touring production on an annual basis. This unique Edinburgh theatre is exclusively committed to new writing and with a wealth of expertise and talent in its threshold, The Traverse has developed an exponential growth of theatre culture in Scotland and the UK.

The Traverse Theatre Company have showcased productions at various cities worldwide including London, Toronto, Budapest, Oslo, Stockholm and New York. Their recent touring productions include, 'The People Next Door', 'Perfect Days', 'Iron', 'Outlying Islands' to name but a few. It is one of the most significant theatre venues in Edinburgh to stage world class premières in its two auditoriums during the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe.

Education and outreach play an integral part to the company's remit, focusing on playwriting for young people. Their flagship education project CLASS ACT provides a platform for young people of school age to work alongside professional performers and to demonstrate their acting ability on stage at The Traverse Theatre. The Traverse Young Writers Group is also a significant part of this programme and has been operating successfully over the last four years.

The Theatre's two auditoriums have their own unique style and are both fully equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and visual equipment. The Traverse is available for hire and ideal for holding corporate events and meetings. The legendary Bar Café can comfortably accommodate up to 300 people offering sumptuous cocktails, freshly squeezed juices and an extensive wine list to patrons before and after performances.
