The Usher Hall in Edinburgh's West End is undoubtedly one of the world's most striking concert halls, en par with New York's Carnegie Hall and The Royal Albert Hall in London. Donated to the City of Edinburgh by philanthropist Andrew Usher, this classical edifice was competed in 1914 and architecturally, The Usher Hall owes much of its features to the French Beaux Arts style.
The interior of this premier concert hall is lavishly adorned with Sienna Marble along its corridors, ornate plaster panels and decorative medallions of classical composers and monarchs throughout, from Bach to James I of Scotland. The proportion of the auditorium is colossal in size - 117 feet across and 60 feet in height with a 2400 capacity. The proscenium opening is 65 feet wide and from the front of the platform, the hall extends 93 feet to the back of the grand circle.
In recent years, The Usher Hall received extensive renovation thanks to Edinburgh City Council's funding of £9 million for phase one refurbishment programme that commenced in 1998. Electrical, heating and ventilation systems were renewed and extensive repairs and redecoration to the ceiling, auditorium stage and foyers areas were carried out including new seating. Today, a fundraiser has been appointed to raise a further £11 million for phase two-modernisation programme for the Usher Hall to survive well into the 21st Century and beyond.
Owned and managed by Edinburgh City Council, The Usher Hall has staged a dazzling plethora of stars in the music industry from Ella Fitzgerald to Elton John, from Paul McCartney to Bing Crosby amongst other legends. This prestigious venue is internationally renowned for staging classical music and philharmonic orchestras with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, Vienna and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras making regular appearances.
This cultural landmark in the heart of Scotland's Capital has showcased some of the world's greatest concerts, symphonies, comedy and theatrical events for the best part of a century and will continue to thrive as one of the world's finest concert halls into the 21st Century.
