Pollock House in Glasgow is a building of outstanding quality set in the
grounds of Pollock Park. The house itself used to belong to the Maxwell
family who stayed there for over 600 years.
The interiors of the house are spectacular with marble and mahogany hallway
and period ceramics, silverware and furnishings on display. Art lovers will
love the superb collection of paintings with works from El Greco, Blake
and Murillo, amongst others.
Take a look round the servants quarters and you will see the grand scale
that was needed to keep such a large family home running. Look for the photograph
of the Victorian servants and count the number of people required to keep
things running smoothly. If you visit at the weekend staff and family members
dress in period costume giving an entertaining glimpse into what life was
like in the Victorian era.
There is an award winning Edwardian kitchen restaurant on site serving such
culinary delights as home made soups and baking. So once you've built up
your appetite head there to be refreshed. There is also a food shop in the
housekeeper's room.
Beautifully kept gardens are also something to behold including a large
collection of over 1,000 species of rhododendrons. Running through the gardens
is the White Cart river, spanned by a bridge built in 1757.
There is always something going on in Pollock Park for example in August
there is a murder mystery weekend, which you can take part in and try to
solve. The Christmas celebrations at the house are renowned as being magical.
There are also regular antiques fairs and other events going on regularly
and also special children's events.
Located on the south side of the city Pollock house is located within the
grounds of Pollock Country Park and is easily accessible by public transport
or by car. Pollock Country Park also has many woodland walks and cycle track
available to make a day of it.
