The internationally acclaimed Botanic Gardens of Glasgow is home to a
collection of the most exotic plants in the world, otherwise impossible
to grow in these temperatures out with their controlled environment. A variety
of themes of horticultural and botanical interest are found in the grounds
as well as attractive walks by the River Kelvin. The gardens are seen as
a break of tranquillity from the commotion of the West End and City Centre
and a chance to marvel at a collection of plants from around the world all
within the one grounds.
The gardens cover some 28 acres (11 hectares) and consist of 12 conservatories
containing a range of plants from cacti to orchids most notable however
is the 2137 sq metre Kibble Palace built in 1873 (one of the largest glasshouses
in Britain), containing a marvellous collection of tree ferns and plants
from Australia New Zealand, Africa, the Americas and Far East.
Admission is free and the gardens are only a 5-minute walk from the West
End's Hill head Subway station (Byres Rd) and numerous buss routes or a
beautiful 40-minute walk from the city centre. The gardens also provide
wheelchair and pushchair access, a café, toilet facilities, a visitor and
exhibition centre and dogs are allowed within the premises.
