The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse in Glasgow
11 Mitchell Lane
Tel: 0141-221-6362
Open: Times vary from Monday to Friday

Inaugurated in July 1999 by HM Queen Elizabeth II, The Lighthouse is Scotland’s first purpose built National Centre of Architecture and Design. This extraordinarily innovative structure is housed in the converted former 1895 built Glasgow Herald Newspaper Headquarters in Mitchell Street, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Lighthouse’s principle aim is to foster the links between design, architecture and creativity. Since opening the centre has welcomed in excess of 1 million visitors and functions under a charitable trust. Its revenue is generated by a combination of public and private sector subsidies, including substantial government grants to promote their Architectural Policy for Scotland and social policies of lifelong learning, social inclusion and neighbourhood renewal.

The Lighthouse is home to 1,400 square metres of exhibition and studio space spanned over six floors and showcases between 15-20 exhibitions annually, most of which are of international significance. In 2005, it hosted the prestigious Venice Biennale, Milan Design Fair and London Design Festival. In honour to the building’s original architect, The Lighthouse is home to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Interpretation Centre, Glasgow’s premiere city centre venue to provide visitors with a guide to key Mackintosh buildings in and around the city as well as a comprehensive depiction of Mackintosh’s work and his cultural phenomena.

A series of conferences and events are held in this contemporary style conversion including the Creative Entrepreneurs Club tailored for practitioners from creative industries and a Forum for Innovation in Public Art. The Lighthouse is at the forefront of staging conferences of international standing such as the European Forum on Architecture and The European Design Forum to name but a few.

It is also renowned as one of the Europe’s finest and largest temporary exhibition galleries of its kind, featuring three main temporary exhibition galleries, a review gallery and one permanent exhibition space all under one roof in this magnificent Mackintosh-designed building. These contemporary stylish and flexible spaces have been carefully designed to host a rich plethora of temporary exhibitions that attract art aficionados from all parts of Europe and beyond.

No visit to The Lighthouse would be the complete without visiting the viewing platform on level 6, offering spectacular panoramic views across Glasgow City Centre. Visitors can marvel at the eclectic mix of architectural styles from the observation platform featuring wrap-round glass. The Café on level 6 is perfect place to complete your visiting experience where you can simply relax and enjoy a selection of refreshments and meals from its sumptuously decadent menu.

The Lighthouse is situated on Mitchell Street in the heart of Glasgow, near Argyle Street and Buchanan Street. Entry to the Gallery is £3 for adults and £1.50 for concessions and is opened to 5.00pm daily.
