mountainous region in Northern Scotland enchants visitors with a rich plethora
of lively events and festivals in towns and villages dotted across the Highlands,
dedicated to the its long and turbulent history, its majestic landscape
and the its rich larder of produce that the Highland region is renowned
for.
Why not visit the Highlands during the winter when you can experience the
region's romantic and picture postcard scenery with white snow dusting the
peaks of the Cairngorms and West Highlands. The winter season in the Highlands
welcomes visitors to attend the spectacular Aviemore Dog Sled Rally every
January, attracting thousands from around the UK and beyond to the forests
around the resort of Aviemore. This century old racing tradition showcases
around 200 teams of huskies from all over Britain straining at the leash
in late January. Organised by the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain,
the rally is run on tracks around Loch Morlich, set in the backdrop of the
Cairngorm Mountains. This event is the biggest gathering of its kind in
the UK with first bred dogs put to the test under Artic conditions.
In the West Highlands, the annual Fort William Mountain Film Festival is
showcased for nine days in February which offers the best winter walking
and climbing conditions of the year. Mountaineers and walking enthusiasts
we will be enthralled by a varied and very full programme of lectures, films,
activities and exhibitions relating to the mountains of this world renowned
walking region. Following the festival's success in 2003, 2004 and 2005,
it is now secures its place as one of the Highland region's most popular
annual fixtures. Why not book dates for winter walking, climbing and skiing
in Fort William and Lochaber, the Outdoor Capital of the UK and enjoy the
entertainment organised by the Fort William Mountain Film Festival.
For gastronomists and those passionate about food, the Highland Feast Festival
will certainly tantalise those taste buds, offering a sumptuous feast of
fresh Scottish produce, fine malt whiskies and liqueurs and a host of Highland
entertainment, affectionately renowned as a 'lively celebration of some
of the world's finest produce'. Undoubtedly the largest Food and Drinks
Festival in the North, this festival plays host to an effervescent melange
of epicurean activities and entertainment, staged in variety of towns and
villages across the Highlands, from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh in late
September and early October, every year. This dynamic event has attracted
over 7,000 people in recent years and offers an exquisite range of game,
fruits, preserves and seafood for tasting or purchase. Definitely one to
get your teeth into!
The Highlands of Scotland is beautiful throughout the year with changing
