Loch Lomond is the largest expanse of inland fresh water in Britain extending 24 miles from its southern shores to Ardlui in the north and a width of 5 miles at its widest reaches. Situated in the very heart of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park - the first in Scotland. The loch and its majestic landscape are world renowned for its stunning natural beauty and charming picture postcard villages straddling the shores of this vast inland fresh water lake.
Boasting a chain of more than 40 islands and islets, some of which are inhabited, Loch Lomond certainly lives up to its reputation as one of Britain's premiere holiday destinations. There is quite literally something for everyone in this breathtaking National Park inaugurated in 2002 - from trekking amidst rolling glens and jagged peaks to a host of water-based activities, ranging from boat trips to windsurfing.
Loch Lomond features a landscape of dramatic contrasts and marks the geological boundary between Highland and Lowland Scotland. From the village of Ardlui in the north, the surrounding mountainous terrain sweeps majestically down to the foreshores of the loch where Highland streams and rivers flow. This area is much loved for its striking panoramic vistas and impromptu events staged at various villages and hotels that hug the northern shores of this pristine loch. In contrast to the breathtaking Highland landscape in the north, Loch Lomond's southern shores are hugged with both fertile and gentle terrain, home to verdant deciduous forests, world-class golf courses and Lomond Shores, Loch Lomond's largest visitor centre and attraction situated in Balloch, the southern gateway to this magnificent region.
