About Banff

Established as a commercial port and Royal Burgh in the 1100s, the stunning coastal town of Banff in Aberdeenshire is important commercial and tourist centre on Scotland's north east coast, affording magnificent views over the Moray Firth to neighbouring Macduff. Traces of its mercantile past are evident in the town centre in today's setting with its Mercat Cross and restored Tolbooth Steeple.

Renowned for its stunning architecture, Banff's upper town is home to elegant restored Georgian townhouses and edifices contrasting harmoniously with the lower town and old harbour that once functioned as one of the most significant commercial ports in the North East. The town's rich heritage is unveiled at the Banff Museum, shedding light on its strong commercial history as a leading market town as well as its maritime heritage.

The town's most distinctive attraction and landmark is Duff House, an exquisite 18th century Baroque mansion that served as the former residence as the 1st Earl of Fife and later transformed as prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. Following a major restoration project in 1995, this opulent 18th century mansion is a world-class attraction, owned and managed under the auspices of the National Galleries of Scotland. Famed for its stunning architectural excellence, Banff strives as a vibrant commercial centre and has a wealth of amenities and shops to choose from, making it an ideal base for exploring the Moray Firth Coast.
