About Montrose
Situated at the border with Aberdeenshire, the stunning coastal resort of
Montrose is the northern-most town in Angus and is one of the region's most
significant centres and holiday bases blessed with spectacular coastal and
cliff-top scenery and excellent transport links with Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Dundee and Aberdeen. Granted a 'Royal Charter' in the 12th century, the Royal Burgh of Montrose was largely developed in the 19th Century around a natural harbour overlooking the North Sea. The High Street forms the hub of the town and is aligned with early 19th century architecture such as Montrose Library and the imposing Montrose Old Church with its 220ft spire dating from 1834.
There is a wealth of visitor attractions and activities to discover in Montrose such as the Montrose Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, regarded as an important haven for various species of migrating birds and waders and undoubtedly a mecca for ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts from all over. One of the town's premier attractions for leisure travellers is its World Championship Links Course, ranking as the fifth oldest golf course in the world. The history of the Royal Burgh is charted at the Montrose Museum depicting the town's rich inheritance in chronological order from prehistory through to the Jacobean Rebellion and up to today's context.
