About Troon

The name Troon comes from the Celtic for headland or point that is appropriate as the town has a natural harbour that point out into the sea from the land. Troon used to be the main port for the export of coal and by the late 1800's was one of the top ten coal ports in Britain.

A shipyard opened in 1860 but nowadays the shipyards hopefully going to be used as a ship repair facility as they are no longer working shipyards. They are however used as ferry terminals for the Seacat ferries that travel to Stranraer and then across the North Channel to Belfast.

Troon is a small town in Ayrshire in Scotland that is most famous for its internationally renowned golf course, Royal Troon. Founded in 1878 by a few enthusiasts it is now regarded as one of the most demanding courses of the championship circuit. During its time it has played hosts to many professional events including the open, and many domestic and amateur championships. Royal Troon is only one of the six golf courses that surround Troon making Troon a golfing Mecca and the ideal location for a golfing holiday.
